John Folsom

BIO

John Folsom spent his childhood in western Kentucky, and he was forever marked by the epic Southern landscape. After earning a BFA in Cinema and Photography, Folsom carved his own path of photographic inquiry, rendering raw photographs with layers of oil paint and wax. His works are inspired by the idealized landscape, which is crystallized with the myth, rectangular format, and an earthy palette of Hudson River School paintings, which he also collects. Folsom is a former resident at the Christoph Merian Foundation in Switzerland, and his work has been included in both national and international exhibitions; from Boston to Belfast. Extensive travel, particularly through the South Carolina Low Country, further informs Folsom’s format and its rectangular format. His work is represented in private and corporate collections, and in several museums throughout the Southeast. Most recently, Folsom has been exhibited at the Gibbes Museum, Charleston: The Lure of the Low Country.
